Then & Now: First Generation Dodge Viper

This week’s cold weather has made us remember December. The last month of the year has always been our big Christmas double issue. Back in 1994, our December issue was the largest to-date. It had all the fun toys for 1995, and none was more anticipated than the Dodge Viper.

Don’t be fooled by the Porsche cover, the early Vipers were the most sought-after cars on the road. Dodge built them mostly by hand, this kept quality high along with demand. Only 155 examples were completed in 1992, without windows, Air Conditioning or outside door handles.

By 1994, Dodge realized buyers might want A/C, and revisions to the intake and exhaust bumped torque to 465 lb-ft. A reverse lockout was also added to keep sloppy shifting from destroying the transmission.

Remember when Air Conditioning was an option? Heat was standard, as the side pipes kept you nice and toasty year-round. A fiberglass roof became a dealer-option, adding $2,500 to the base price.

A new addition for 1995 was storage pockets for the seat cushions. Airbags were still a few years away, and if you wanted ABS, it was not even optional. These were drivers’ cars. If you wanted an automatic, the salespeople might laugh at you, because it was also never offered.

Finding good examples of early Vipers is getting hard because they were unforgiving to novice drivers. You won’t find one at your local Buy Here/Pay Here, but we always keep a healthy selection at your fingertips.
