If you like reading about cars or driving them in real life, odds are you’re a fan of racing them virtually. For years, video games have acted as an escape for automotive enthusiasts, dating back to the 1970’s. It wasn’t until the release of Gran Turismo on the Playstation 1 in 1997 that racing games became more serious and more lifelike than ever before. Since then, we’ve had multiple iterations of the Gran Turismo game and have seen new titles pop up every where. Some of these titles have stuck around and become staples (see Forza Motorsport).
Today, I put together the top five racing games on the Playstation 4 according to the review scores on Metacritic.com. These ratings take into account review scores from around the internet and combine them into one cumulative score.
5. Need for Speed: Rivals (80/100)[youtube id=”xsKHweFi7AU” align=”center” mode=”normal” autoplay=”no” maxwidth=”750″]
Everyone who had a Playstation 2 and own Need for Speed: Underground knows very well what the Need for Speed franchise is capable of. This entry into their series brings together high stakes racing and police pursuit chases.
4. Trackmania Turbo (81/100)[youtube id=”3piye62BYf4″ align=”center” mode=”normal” autoplay=”no” maxwidth=”750″]
There’s virtually no racing game that’s as fast-paced as Trackmania Turbo. The speed, twists, turns, anti-gravity and jumps all come together for one of the most addicting racing games on consoles. What’s more, you can create your own death-defying tracks to race on and share.
3. F1 2016 (82/100)[youtube id=”DPeA453SAhs” align=”center” mode=”normal” autoplay=”no” maxwidth=”750″]
Sometimes you want to pick up the controller and pretend you’re Lewis Hamilton. This is where F1 2016 comes into play. The latest Formula 1 racing games puts you in a virtual racing world where you’re a budding racing star that looks to create his own story. Sure, your typical racing “career mode” is fun, but narrative can add a whole new aspect to racing games.
2. Project CARS (83/100)[youtube id=”DQIbUBbNGd0″ align=”center” mode=”normal” autoplay=”no” maxwidth=”750″]
Project CARS came into the world as the first in its series, something rare nowadays. What drew me to this game, personally, was the ability to start off as a kart racer and work my way all the way up to the highest tiers of racing. It’s a long journey, but one you’ll appreciate every step of the way.
1. DiRT Rally (85/100)[youtube id=”E79ofEtVlBg” align=”center” mode=”normal” autoplay=”no” maxwidth=”750″]
Rally racing is undoubtedly one of the most exciting and intense forms automotive competition out there. The thrill of being constantly on edge of control on dirt roads and flying through hairpin corners that overlook cliffs is something that can only happen in rally racing. Taking on rally courses in real life may be very dangerous, but thankfully DiRT Rally does a fantastic job of capturing the spirit of the races in one incredible video game.
