This new more efficient ( under 5% prop slip) and stable hull design allows the 438 Skater to be faster than the 388 Skater even though it has the same 1350 horsepower rating and is over 2,000 lbs heavier. This vessel can also be placed into a 1550 horsepower race mode, which has never been activated during its 28 hours of run time. There are two different keys that can be used depending on which mode is wanted, either 1350 hp or 1550 hp.

The development of the hull design by Skater Powerboats was needed due to Mercury Racings development of reliable, higher horsepower performance engines.
