What image pops into your head when you read “Yenko”? Everyone imagines a 1969 Camaro with no options except the big 427. But Don Yenko didn’t limit his builds to just one model or year. His dealership would transform anything from Novas to Corvairs into fire-breathing beasts.
To test the market for a “Yenko Super Camaro” his service department ordered 65 COPO Camaros in 1968. They arrived with the L78 Big Block 396 backed by a Muncie M21 transmission. Yenko’s team pulled the engine to install the L72 Big Block 427. To cope with the increased power, heavy-duty cooling and a larger sway bar were also part of the package. This car is Yenko # YS-8026 and it has a fully documented history.
It is one of only 11 Yenko RS/SS Camaros built in ’68, and it still retains the 140 mph speedometer, power steering, AM radio, and COPO connection paperwork. Along with the vinyl roof, this had to be one of the most expensive Camaros sold that year. Everything from the Winters intake manifold to the block has been verified, and it rides on Pontiac Rally II wheels with Yenko center caps.
