Ferrari 458 Spider Review
Unveiled in 2011 as a topless model for the Ferrari 458, the Ferrari 458 Spider specs are based on an aerodynamic sports car with the first retractable hardtop roof. Designed and manufactured by the Italian automaker Ferrari from 2011 until 2015, the production numbers are estimated to be less than 7,000 per year to preserve the brand’s unique and rare position. The actual production numbers of the Ferrari 458 Spider model, however, have not been released by the automaker. Regardless, the Ferrari 458 Spider is a highly desirable vehicle for many reasons: it’s got incredible looks that still look fresh, modern, and beautiful even next to newer supercars and newer Ferraris, it has performance and driving ability that is impressive by today’s standards, and its incredible interior received input from F1 driver Michael Schumacher for racing-inspired usability and aggressive looks.
Ferrari 458 Spider Engine
The “458” portion of the Ferrari 458 Spider model is derived from the engine. A 4.5 liter V8, mid-engined model, the car boasts a 558 horsepower production and 398 pound-feet of torque. This powerful V8 makes the Ferrari 458 Spider 0 to 60 MPH just 3 seconds flat. With the ability to reach speeds of 199 MPH, this Italian racecar received an engine upgrade in 2015. After that, the Ferrari 458 Spider horsepower became 570. The 458 was the first road-going, mid-engined Ferrari to feature direct fuel injection, as well.
Ferrari 458 Spider Transmission
The Ferrari 458 Spider makes it their first mainstream model to forgo the traditional manual transmission in favor of a dual-clutch 7-speed gearbox. The inclusion of the dual-clutch transmission ensures a smoother ride and seamless shifting from one speed to the next for maximum comfort. The inclusion of the automatic transmission and its paddleshift design was inspired by the designs of Formula One racecars. As many drivers are more familiar with operating vehicles equipped with automatic transmissions, this also increases the Ferrari 458 Spider’s allure.
Ferrari 458 Spider Brakes
The designers of the Ferrari 458 Spider realized that a top-notch braking system was necessary for a car with so much power. As the most important safety feature on the car, designers opted to use ABS and standard carbon-ceramic brakes. This was not a surprising inclusion, however, as these brakes are standard across all models. The 458 Spider include a prefill function that enables the pistons in the brake calipers to move the pads on lift-off to reduce the amount of delay drivers experience after hitting the brakes. As a result, the vehicle has a notable stopping distance of 107 feet when traveling at speeds of 62MPH.
Ferrari 458 Spider Design
At first glance, it isn’t hard to tell that the Ferrari 458 Spider is a well-designed piece of machinery. Inspired by the designs of lighting fast race cars, the 458 Spider was dreamed up by a Master of Design, Donato Coco at Pininfarina, with the help of Formula One racecar drivers. The design focuses on aerodynamic efficiency, although the aesthetic appeal certainly did not suffer as a result of this feat. Winglets on the front grille, a curvy body, and a lightweight, aluminum hardtop retractable roof were all intended to reduce drag and improve speed. What engineers were able to achieve with the setup of the 458 Spider was equal acceleration when compared to the 458 Italia, which is a difficult feat when it comes to creating a convertible version of a supercar. The hood slopes forward while its low-to-the-ground nose enables the air to effortlessly glide over the top of the car. With dimensions of 178″ L x 76 ” W x 48″ H, the Ferrari 458 Spider packs a punch; proving itself to be just as functional as it is stylish. At the back of the car, you will see unique setup of three tailpipes, giving the car a distinguished look while maintaining true, timeless, and classic Ferrari beauty.

As production of the Ferrari 458 Spider ceased in 2015 after the announcement of the release of the newer Ferrari 488, available models are in pre-owned condition. As with any pre-owned vehicle, the price will largely be determined by the location and the market. In areas where the rare Ferrari 458 Spider is in high demand, expect to pay slightly more than you would in a market where there is little demand. A general price line for the Ferrari 458 Spider lies between $180,000 to $300,000 for the latest 2015 model. A quick look inside the 458 Spider reveals a luxurious layout that is designed for both comfort and functionality. Whether driving alone or with a passenger, there is ample headroom and legroom. Two custom Ferrari seats are dressed in leather and offer full customization to ensure that you are able to achieve the position that is most comfortable for you. The trim, also leather, is typically a black or tan color, which gives a sophisticated and polished look to the interior.
Other features found in the interior of the Ferrari 458 Spider include Bluetooth capabilities and a top-of-the-line sound system that comes complete with a built-in auxiliary audio jack. Other optional features include a rearview camera, faux suede upholstery, and satellite radio. A notable change in this version is the shift to altering traditional stalk controls, such as turn signals, into buttons that are built into the steering wheel.

Perhaps the most notable feature of the Ferrari 458 Spider is its retractable aluminum hardtop roof. The roof weighs an impressive 55 lbs less than a standard soft-top roof and can be opened or closed in a speedy 14 seconds. Whether opened or closed, the aerodynamic design of the Ferrari 458 Spider is not compromised. This makes it an excellent option for those who love the look and feel of a convertible but want the added protection and simplicity that comes along with a traditional hardtop roof. Paired with a double-wishbone suspension, multi-link setup and an F1-Trac traction control system, the car also offers improved cornering and longitudinal acceleration by around 32% when compared to the models that were unveiled before it.
