The Porsche race car developed for the road.

Although Porsche’s historic fleet features a long list of automotive icons, there are a few models that hold extreme significance for collectors, owners, and enthusiasts. Alongside examples like the 959, Carrera GT, and 918 Spyder, the Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 establishes itself as the fastest German production car of its day. Porsche is proud to celebrate 50-Years of the 911 Carrera RS 2.7 by looking back on the 911 variant that helped change the way we look at racing and rallying. Making its debut at the Pairs Motor Show in 1972, the special edition 911 became the product of 15 dedicated Porsche engineers with a focus on pushing the boundaries of both design and performance. The production model was the first chassis to receive a front and rear spoiler to enhance power and aerodynamics, which led to it being the first 911 to be christened ‘Carrera’.

As an entry into the motorsport world, Porsche’s initial plan was to build 500-examples to homologate the 911 Carrera RS 2.7 for Group 4 Special GT cars. After its road approval and acceptance into customer racing events, the original 500-chassis were all sold within two months. A total of 1,580 examples were built, and once the 1,000th vehicle had been made, the Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 was homologated for Group 3 as well as Group 4. Included in the production series of Porsche’s new addition was the available M471 package, an option that added 200 lightweight ‘Sport’ versions to the mix. A further 55 examples of the racing version, 17 base vehicles, and 1,308 touring versions (M472) were built.

The Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 features a 2.7-Liter Flat-Six fuel-injected engine that produces over 210-horsepower 188-ft lbs of torque to its rear wheels. Its traditional 5-speed transmission and 6,300 rpm top-line launch the 911 from 0-60mph in 5.8-seconds, making it the first production car to break the six-second mark set by the German trade journal ‘auto, motor und sport’. With a body made from thin sheet metal, thin windows, and plastic parts, Porsche was able to achieve a 152mph top speed because of its strategic weight reduction. Now viewed as one of the most highly sought-after Porsche examples, the 911 Carrera RS 2.7 gets its claim to fame as the race car developed for the road. Porsche is celebrating 50-Years of the 911 Carrera RS 2.7 with a special exhibition at the Porsche Museum on September 20th, 2022.
