Supercar manufacturers need to follow this story because it looks like a new contender is on the horizon and called the Porsche 960. According to Car Magazine, Porsche is working on a new mid-engined supercar that will rival the Ferrari 488 GTB, Lamborghini Huracan and McLaren 650S. The news comes after the German automaker applied for the “960” trademark in September 2015.
Details on the car are currently unknown, but Car Magazine did list off some rumors. As for its engine, they note that it’s claimed it will pack a quad-turbocharged 3.9-liter flat-eight engine. That’s one heck of an engine for a Porsche, especially considering the car’s target weight is supposedly marked at just over 3,000 lbs. They also claim that this engine will feature Porsche’s new “VarioCom” system, rumoured to be the brand’s new system variable compression system. With this type of system, the engine will benefit from greater fuel economy, smoother engine activity, reduced emissions and more.
While this is technically all just hearsay for now, stay with us as we learn more about Porsche’s new 960 supercar.
