In the United Arab Emirates (UAE) winning car number plates were all the craze over the weekend as bidders put up millions to secure their own piece of car racing history.
One such bidder, an Emirati businessman by the name of Arif Ahmad Al Zarouni paid a whopping 18 million dirhams (nearly $5 million U.S.) for the Shajah Number 1 plate. The bid for the No. 1 plate started at 1 million dirhams (approximately $3.6 million U.S.)
Gulf News Transport reported the event was a major hit, and organizers struggled to control the crowds and the bidding. Winning plates were in extreme demand, many of them selling for hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars.
