BMW took a unique approach with the carbon fiber i8. It uses a 1.5 liter three cylinder along with a turbo and a 7.1 kW hybrid system for a total output of 357 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque. Even with the exotic construction of the composite unibody the curb weight is above average for a performance coupe at 3,455 lbs. An electric motor takes the place of a front differential to deliver all-wheel drive.
