Every year, Mercedes-AMG develops the market’s best of engineering, repeatedly astounding the world. Whether it’s through the eyes of someone walking through the showroom, or on the sidelines of a racing competition, they’ve perfected the art they’ve been crafting since 1967. This one, however, is built to shock and awe those behind it on the racetrack. The Mercedes CLA 45 AMG Racing Series takes the original CLA 45 AMG, released in June of this year, and transforms it into a machine of a different breed.

Mercedes-AMG considers it to be the “perfect customer sports racing car,” and we consider it to be one of the most exciting racecars of the year. The Racing Series is equipped with an AMG 2.0-Liter Turbocharged I4 with output levels that can be properly adjusted for different competitions. Off the line, the Racing Series boasts an astonishing 360 horsepower, making it the most powerful stock four-cylinder in production. Mercedes provided the same SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed sports transmission found in the original CLA 45 AMG to transfer the power. The drivetrain of this racing machine, just as with the original, will vary, being either AWD or FWD.

What is completely different for the racing series is the body, which has been completely crafted from carbon fiber. The front and rear aprons are lower and wider with functional intake vents for cooling, along with new side skirts. A roll cage made completely of high-strength steel is inside, along with a P 1300 GT bucket seat from Recaro, built with a Head and Neck Support system. For high-end control on the racetrack, it will be provided to race teams with wide treadless tires and an adjustable wide-track suspension in both the front and rear for individual racetrack adjustments, such as height and damper.

While it may be the “Racing Series,” it still has many components from the original that we find in showrooms, showing how much sport Mercedes truly provides to us without the professional sponsorships.

“The large demand for a customer sports racing car for the extremely popular race series with turbocharged 2.0-Liter cars encouraged us to present a show car CLA 45 AMG Racing Series,” Uli Fritz, Head of AMG Customer Sport, said in a Sept. 4 press release.

Mercedes’ involvement in racing competitions has been present for years, winning many competitions and awards. The SLS AMG GT3, which saw success in its first year, won the “grand slam” in a GT3 long-distance race. Four years later, the SLS GT3 continues to succeed in competitions worldwide, giving Mercedes-AMG high confidence in the same outcome for the CLA 45 AMG Racing Series.

While Mercedes-AMG may look at their miraculous show car and see a future success in worldwide competitions, and racecar drivers see it as their key to victory, we see it as a step forward for the consumer production line on the local streets.
