In days of old, there was one G-Class. The Mercedes Geländewagen was introduced in 1979 as Germany’s first SUV. It gained incredible power and minor aesthetic upgrades along the way, but four decades is a long run for any model. So the 2019 G-Class was announced last year, and it only shares a name with its predecessor.
In a press release this morning the manufacturer has outlined the details of the G63, their top model, at least for this year. We figured the G63 would take a year off to allow consumers and dealers to get aquainted with the new G550, but Mercedes-AMG never stops innovating. Starting at $124,500 is the G550. It uses the same 4.0-liter twin-turbo engine found across the Mercedes lineup. It offers 416 hp and 450 lb-ft of torque.
If you need to leap across broken ground, the G63 AMG uses a hotter version of the 4.0 to offer 577 horsepower and a whopping 627 lb-ft of torque. The price has been bumped slightly, to $147,500 before delivery. Don’t let this put a sour taste in your mouth. The reason for the price increase is simple. The 2019 G63 AMG makes the same power as its 5.5-liter predecessor while offering better performance and fuel economy. The improvements over the 2018 model include everything from the display screens to the chassis bushings, and the refinements are long overdue. Even the G550 will give older G63 and G65 models a run for their money, which is why our dealers are happy to answer all your questions.
