The automotive industry is currently undergoing an electric transformation that will change the way we drive. Whether it’s the savings made at the gas pump, the highly advanced technologies, or the unprecedented rates of acceleration, this new era of electrified cars is unquestionably exciting. One automaker that is embracing the metamorphosis of powertrains in style is none other than Ferrari. While the Prancing Horse’s history may be filled with famous engines like the Colombo V12, F106 V8, and other ICE-powerplants, this new generation of hybrid vehicles is phenomenal. Case in point, the new Ferrari 296 GTB.
This sinewy stunner is a mid-rear-engined berlinetta and an important model in the company’s timeline for multiple reasons. First and foremost, the new Ferrari features the first six-cylinder engine to ever power a road-going vehicle that dons the Cavallino Rampante badge. Not only does the 296 GTB feature a historic six-cylinder engine, it’s also a plug-in hybrid. Yes, you read that correctly.

Ferrari 296 GTB Specs

This new hybrid powertrain consists of a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 engine coupled with a rear-mounted electric motor. Ferrari’s engineers went to great lengths to ensure that the new six-cylinder engine would live up to the automaker’s high standards of efficiency and power. One of the most significant developments was the implementation of turbos inside the vee, a first for a Ferrari. This design allowed the engineers to reduce the engine’s overall mass, increase power, and lower the center of gravity. Altogether, the Ferrari 296 GTB’s V6 produces 654 horsepower while the electric motor adds an additional 165 horses for a total output of 819 horsepower. That number is unexpected from a V6-powered vehicle, but that’s where Ferrari’s mastery of hybrid technology comes into play.
Being a groundbreaking addition to the lineup, Ferrari had to create a timeless design for the 296 GTB that would be as efficient as it is elegant. To say that they accomplished the task would be an understatement. The design of the 296 GTB is undeniably that of a Ferrari, but it is distinct. Design aspects such as the wraparound visor windshield, vertical rear screen, flying buttresses, muscular wheel arches, and integrated spoiler all combine to create the stylish silhouette of the 296 GTB. The announcement of the 296 GTB Assetto Fiorano package is important. It significantly reduces the weight through smart material choices such as carbon-fiber com ponents and a Lexan rear screen. Other notable features include the adjustable Multimatic shock ab sorbers, the Michelin Sport Cup2R high-performance tires, and the option to order a livery inspired by the 250 Le Mans.

Ferrari’s electric future is looking brighter by the day thanks to marvelous additions like the new 296 GTB.
