In a normal world, supercharged V8 engines are found in rear wheel drive supercars and better suited for destroying tires than accelerating. Jaguar resents this notion and with the help of sophisticated stability systems and hearty driveline components, have been able to squeeze the blown 5.0-liter V8 from the Land Rover Sport SVR into the F-TYPE’s AWD chassis, creating the F-TYPE Project 7.
Let that sink in. An opportunity now exists to send 575 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission.
To celebrate this achievement Jaguar’s Special Vehicle Operations revived the classic British speedster and named it Project 7. This all-aluminum roadster does away with the power top and associated hardware in favor of open-air motoring. A canvas top is included in case of an emergency, but said top must be fastened to the deck lid by hand.
I had the opportunity to drive one as part of our duPont REGISTRY Live experience at the Nashville Auto Show, and this car doesn’t disappoint. Even while closed, the active exhaust pops and crackles with an authoritative tone. Positive displacement superchargers provide instant boost, delicate throttle control is required. Only 250 examples of the Project 7 will be built, and only a handful are coming to the US.
