If you need to be the lightest car on the block, Ford has gone to great lengths to bring carbon fiber wheel technology to the US. Christian von Koenigsegg pioneered the production of composite wheels for his supercars, and Ford made them standard equipment on the new Shelby GT350R Mustang. The exotic five spoke design will be offered in matte finish or glossy clear coat as optional accessories for the GT. Standard wheels will be traditional forged aluminum, so it will be interesting to see how many buyers opt for the exclusive rolling stock.
Engineers spend many late nights tuning a car’s suspension to the weight of the wheel/tire to make sure harmonics and vibrations are not felt in the cockpit. Even the best forged aluminum alloy wheels will resonate at certain speeds, so kudos to Ford for pushing composite wheels into the mainstream. Hopefully, the GT’s bolt pattern is not Ford’s traditional 5 lug on 4.5″, because we don’t want to see the supercar on cinder blocks.
