“Since I started building cars in 1984, my goal has always been to go above and beyond where anybody has been before,” said Steve Saleen in a press release issued March 20. “This will by far be the most refined and advanced Mustang we have built to date.”
In that same press release, Saleen unveiled one of their finest Mustangs ever: the 2015 302 Black Label.
No, this is not a scotch whisky. But, it is the most powerful production Mustang yet.
Powering the new muscle car is a 5.0-liter Coyote engine with a twin-screw supercharger attached. When the engine and its power supplement are combined, the 302 Black Label is good for 730 hp and 600 lb-ft of torque. For comparison’s sake, the Ferrari F12berlinetta‘s 6.3-liter V12 produces 730 hp and 508 lb-ft of torque.
Unlike previous Mustangs, the Saleen 302 Black Label gets the chance to take advantage of independent suspension. This makes for a Saleen Mustang that can perform in a straight line and on the track. Maintaining the car’s traction are Saleen 20-inch five-spoke alloy wheels, shod in 275/35R20 tires in the front and 275/40R20 tires in the rear. Handling braking is large 15-inch rotors with multi-piston brakes.
Aside from the mechanical aspects of the car, Saleen also modified the 302’s exterior and interior with purpose. On the outside, the front has been lengthened by an inch and a half, while the rear sees almost two inches of extension. This increases the car’s airfoil, allowing for greater downforce across the entirety of the body. More notable than the added inches are the front air splitter and signature Saleen rear wing.
Covering the exterior is a new finish specially developed by Saleen. Called “California Sunset,” this new finish is a cross between golden yellow and the “hues of a setting sun,” according to the release.
Inside is a cabin that is luxurious yet functional. Every gauge vital to the driver is within plain sight, while leather and suede cover the steering wheel, seats and more.
Saleen will be offering the 2015 302 Black Label at a starting price of $73,214. Customers will be able to order the car directly from select Ford dealers across the United States. Each example comes hand signed by Steve Saleen and with a 3-year, 36,000-mile warranty from Saleen.
