Back in March of 1985, the very first issue of duPont REGISTRY went on sale. With this month’s April issue, we celebrate 37 years of continuous publishing. The fact a print magazine is still in business after all that time is worthy of champagne and cake, but we haven’t just survived – we’re thriving.
Last month we debuted the magazine’s new look, which is our signal to you that we’re ready for another 37 years of publishing. It incorporates a new design, larger dimensions, and better paper quality, while also tieing directly into our digital offerings via neatly placed QR codes.
I still have some of those early duPont REGISTRY issues. Like many of you, I saved my favorite issues from 20 and 30 years ago. Flipping through their pages today instantly brings me back to the first time I cracked their spine and saw the hottest cars of the era in print.
Where else could you go in the mid-’80s to see every manner of exotic car for sale, all in one place? In fact, without this magazine, I submit that the market for supercars wouldn’t have exploded in the late 1980s as quickly as it did. The Lamborghini Countach, Ferrari F40, and Porsche 959 were plastered on these pages during that time.
Those poster-era supercars started a revolution among automakers. They created new standards for performance, design, and exclusivity that companies began clambering to raise and defend. The supercars that followed became chapters in a book that’s still being written today with vehicles like the Bugatti Chiron, Koenigsegg Jesko, and McLaren Senna.
One such car was the Porsche Carrera GT, which is our cover car this month. This mid-engine, V10-powered Porsche roadster was produced between 2003 and 2007, and like all the vehicles I’m talking about, it redefined what being “super” meant for a car.
The Carrera GT was an instant classic, made even more so by its production run being cut short. About 1,270 of the originally intended 1,500 units were produced and sold, and the one for sale on our cover may be the lowest mileage one around (at least that we know of).
Classic supercars, whether newer examples like the Carrera GT or progenitors of the genre like the Countach, are our specialty. We’ve stuffed this month’s SELL section with vintage exotics for sale to celebrate the classics. We have to admit, after 37 years and 442 issues, we feel like a classic too.
