In the old days, coupe and convertible versions of the same car were alike only in name. But now that McLaren has perfected the carbon fiber “monocell” chassis, it is possible to lose the roof without compromising handling or performance. The 2018 McLaren 570S Spider is a critical part of their Track 22 plan; the goal of which is to release a slew of new McLaren models by 2022. For those who want a more practical machine, the Sports Series (570S and 570GT) is a more conventional daily driver. They are not endowed with the fancy active hydraulic suspension, and power seats are still optional. The new 570S Spider trades in the hard top for a two-piece composite roof.

McLaren 570S Races to 212 mph on the Autobahn

Stowing neatly away, the convertible mechanism operates for 15 seconds at speeds up to 25 mph. With the top in place, you will have 1.8 liters of storage under the deck lid, in addition to 5.3 liters under the nose. Ahead of the deck lid, a glazed wind deflector can be raised to keep your hairstyle intact. The powertrain was untouched because 570 metric horsepower and 442 lb-ft of torque are plenty for this lightweight. Able to hang with any other convertible, the Spider jumps to 60 mph in 3.1 seconds with a top speed of 204 mph.
