Chevrolet is pushing the boundaries of automotive design with the Chaparral 2X Vision Gran Turismo concept. Unveiled in a Nov. 19 press release and at the Los Angeles Auto Show, this new concept is the American automaker’s interpretation of the ultimate race car.
The Chevrolet Chaparral 2X VGT has been developed exclusively for the fans of the Playstation 3 racing game Gran Turismo 6. Gamers will be able to race this car this holiday season simply by downloading an online update.
Designed by Texas-based Chaparral Racing, who partnered with Chevrolet Research and Development more than 45 years ago, the Chaparral 2X VGT gives us a glimpse into what the future of racing could hold. And while you may be taken by the car’s design, its laser-based propulsion system is the real showstopper.

Packing a 671-kW laser powered by a pack of lithium-ion batteries, the Chaparral 2X VGT is theoretically good for 900 hp, a top speed of 240 mph and a 0-60 mph time of just 1.5 seconds.
To handle this power, the driver of the Chaparral 2X VGT does not sit down, but instead, lays down. “Think of it as adapting a wing suit to a racing car, where the driver’s movements control certain aspects of the aero package,” said Frank Saucedo, who oversaw the development of this concept. “In many ways, the Chaparral 2X VGT is like a racing wing suit, with a protective fuselage for ‘flying’ very low to the ground.”
If this is the future of racing, consider us excited.
