With the BMW i3 already on showroom floors and the i8 plug-in hybrid sports car on its way, BMW is getting ready to provide their i-Series customers with even more technology options to complement their new eco-friendly vehicles.
BMW will be unveiling the new solar carport concept at the international media launch of the i8 in Los Angeles, California, according to a press release issued May 7. This carport is a holistic sustainability concept with a design highlighted by carbon elements and struts made of bamboo.

“With the solar carport concept we opted for a holistic approach: not only is the vehicle itself sustainable, but so is its energy supply,” explained Tom Allemeier, who is responsible for the carport design at BMW Group DesignworksUSA, in the press release. “This is therefore an entirely new generation of carports that allows energy to be produced in a simple and transparent way. It renders the overarching theme of lightweight design both visible and palpable.”
The i Series vehicles will be able to receive charging power through the carport’s BMW i Wallbox Pro. The Wallbox will also be able to indicate how much solar energy goes into charging the car, as well as provide an analysis of recent charging processes. What’s more, the excess energy can be used for domestic use.
