Audi has just announced in a press release issued today the Audi R8 LMX: the world’s first production car with laser high beams.
For the first time ever, the new R8 LMX will have one laser module per headlight, which generates a cone of light with twice the range of a normal LED headlight. Each of these laser modules is comprised of four high-power diodes.
An interesting feature is the laser spot, which is active at a speed of 37.3 mph. This aids the LED high beams through an intelligent, camera-based sensor system, which detects when others are also on the road and actively adjusts the lights in order to not disturb them.
The new Audi R8 LMX will have 570 hp and 398.3 lb-ft of torque under its bonnet, thanks to its 5.2-liter V10 engine. And it won’t take long for the active laser spot system to kick in at 37.3 mph, because the R8 LMX can accelerate from 0-62 mph in just 3.4 seconds and will reach a top speed of 198.8 mph.

Mated to the engine is a seven-speed S tronic transmission that provides power to the quattro permanent all-wheel drive system. This system will rely on a set of 19-inch wheels and carbon fiber ceramic brake disks to control all of the power being laid down.
Ara Blue, the exclusive customized paint finish that features a crystal effect, and a large, fixed rear spoiler draw attention to the R8 LMX’s exterior.
The interior utilizes a black theme that is contrasted against blue accents. The folding bucket seats are covered in fine Nappa leather with a Sepang Blue diamond pattern. Matte carbon fiber covers the center tunnel console, parking brake lever, door inlays and the arc around the cockpit, which works perfectly with a black Alcantara headliner.
The Audi R8 LMX will be available this summer with a starting price of €210,000 in Germany, which is roughly $290,000 USD.Â
