Automotive designers are given the job to create a vehicle that is groundbreaking and cutting-edge in order to keep with the ever-changing times. But the differences between the concept they start with and the production model are stark; sometimes the production model doesn’t even resemble the original concept. This is what makes designing a vehicle for movie a special occasion for automotive designers. It allows for their wildest concepts to come to life like never before.
The latest movie to feature an “out-of-this-world” concept is Ender’s Game, a science fiction film based on Orson Scott Card’s best-selling novel. Audi designers created an exclusive car for Ender’s world: the Audi fleet shuttle quattro. This concept car was entirely designed digitally, and when scenes were shot that involved it, actors drove an Audi A7 Sportback that was digitally replaced with the fleet shuttle quattro in editing.
“It was a very special moment for me when I finally saw our sci-fi Audi on the silver screen,” said Björn Wehrli, a member of the team of designers that created the concept car, in an Oct. 29 press release. “We have created a car for a world in about 75 years, which integrated itself perfectly into the high-tech atmosphere of the movie.”
At the Oct. 28 Hollywood premiere for Ender’s Game, a 1:4 scale model of the Audi fleet shuttle quattro made an appearance, giving onlookers a chance to see what direction automotive design could be heading toward in the future. After its appearance on the red carpet, the concept car started making its way to the Audi Design Studio, where it will be given a place of honor.
