Parking is undoubtedly the worst part of driving. Everyone knows what it feels like to search the lot for what seems like forever for that one moment of pure excitement when you think you see a spot only to find out it’s already inhabited by a smart car or a scooter. There’s nothing more frustrating that circling around a parking lot. Well luckily Audi has addressed this age old problem. Audi will be adding a new cutting edge piece of technology to their Audi connect service; online updates on live parking information. At the moment this advancement needs some work as it only contains data for a very few garages.
However, the future looks promising. Currently only about 2,000 of the 18,000 parking garages covered by this service offer real time updates. The real task is going to be getting everybody else on board. Another aspect of this program is the price of local garages. This will be displayed along with the spot availability to let the driver know which option is cheapest. So far most garages have been hesitant to release this information. It’s definitely going to be a slow process, “We think it will be real within this decade,” says Audi’s Mulhotra, “but that future assumes that this type of parking data is readily available and then the car can use that data and chart its way to its own spot.” It may not be immediately, but when this program is finalized and user ready, drivers will be clamoring to get their hands on this new technology.
