In another stride of innovative creation, Hublot has introduced the world’s first timepiece designed with the purpose of timing a basketball game. The Big Bang UNICO Chronograph Retrograde Kobe “Vino” Bryant was introduced at a private winery in Napa Valley, California, with brand ambassador and the watch’s namesake Kobe Bryant in attendance for an “intimate press conference.”
The Swiss brand announced this timepiece’s introduction in an April 30 release on their website, making note of the fact that this watch’s launch “coincided with the opening of [Hublot’s] first boutique in San Francsico.”
The “Vino” in the watch’s title comes from one of Bryant’s newer nicknames, as well as to the similarities between the art of watch making and the craft of creating a fine wine. Its design is strong and sleek, with its beauty and simplicity creating a bold but subtle statement. In an April 30 interview for Bleacher Report, Bryant explained how important his style was in the watch’s initial vision. He also elaborated on his evolution of style, visible in the different designs of the Black Mamba watch he launched with Hublot in 2013.
Style is a form of communication, it’s a form of expression,” he said, “and we all express ourselves differently, because you grow and you evolve.”

The Big Bang Vino is available in either Black Ceramic or 18k King Gold, with burgundy embellishments on the python strap, in the stitching and on the dial. The face’s Chronograph Retrograde is designed to time the two 48-minute halves of a basketball game, with a smaller 12-hour face below the timer. The case back features green glass with Bryant’s signature etched into the anti-reflective treatment.
