Mercedes-Benz has been taking new approaches to their traditions these past few months, making moves such as the introduction of a new nomenclature system and reviving the Maybach marque. According to a press release issued today, they’re taking another step toward redefining their existing models.
With the heart of a coupe and the styling of an SUV, the new Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe is a combination of two vehicle classes into one impressive model.
“Our GLE Coupé combines typical coupé attributes, such as sportiness, dynamism and agility, with the confident presence, versatility and robustness of an SUV,” said Prof. Dr Thomas Weber, Board Member responsible for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development, in the release. Though the visibility and seating positions within are incredibly reminiscent of an SUV, the performance and driving dynamics are purely sport.
The base model will be available with either a diesel or petrol engine capable of producing between 268 hp and 367 hp, while the top-of-the-range model becomes another first for the marque.
Dubbed the first AMG sports model, the GLE 450 AMG boasts a 9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic transmission and 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive, in addition to a V6 bi-turbo engine capable of creating 367 hp and 383 lb-ft, delivering “performance akin to a sports car.”
