Announcements of new releases are beginning to ramp up prior to the New York International Auto Show, and Mercedes-Benz is the latest to drop some big news. The GLE line has been revamped for 2016, with a score of new engine options for the entire range.
Though quite a few things have been overhauled for the new model year, the most notable additions come in the form of five new engine options. As a press release issued today states, the 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE 250 d will have access to 204 hp thanks to a four-cylinder diesel engine, while the gasoline-powere, 5.5-liter, twin-turbo V8 in the GLE 63 and GLE 63 S will create 557 hp and 585 hp, respectively. But the most impressive and groundbreaking engine option comes in the new GLE 500 e 4MATIC.
Impressively, the first-ever plug-in hybrid SUV from Mercedes-Benz is set to pack quite a punch, with 480 lb-ft and 449 hp on tap. It “combines the power and refinement of a V8 engine with the fuel consumption of a three-litre (sic) car and the versatility of a premium SUV,” as the release describes. Four operating modes are available to choose from; Hybrid utilizes both the combustion engine and electric system, E-mode employs all-electric driving, E-Save is meant to preserve battery life in case of stop-and-go traffic situations and Charge allows the vehicle to charge its battery from the fuel-engine.
The GLE comes as the successor to the ML line, replacing the old nomenclature with their newly introduced system. Unveiled Nov. 12, 2014, the new naming system coincided with the announcement of the marque’s newest luxury sub-brand, Mercedes-Maybach. The nomenclature aims to simplify category designations for both models and engines, ensuring that, for instance, every SUV model name begins with the same “GL” designation.
