Audi has updated their flagship model, the A8, with a few innovative technologies and engine upgrades for the 2014 model year. These updates, combined with the A8s heritage, make for a top-of-the-line luxury four-door sedan.
The A8 is currently offered in the German market with two gasoline and two diesel engine variants. The available gasoline engines are the supercharged 3.0 TFSI, boasting 310 hp, and the V8 twin-turbo 4.0 TFSI with 435 hp. On the diesel side, the engines include the 3.0 TDI clean diesel with 258 hp and the 4.2 TDI clean diesel with 385 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque.
Adding to the already impressive lineup, Audi is also dishing out three additional models. The top-of-the-range is the Audi A8 L W12 quattro. The 6.3-liter W12 gasoline engine produces 500 hp and, surprisingly, has best-in-class dual consumption at a combined 20.10 mpg. The new Audi S8 comes packing 520 hp, thanks to it’s 4.0 TFSI engine, and can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 4.2 seconds. Audi will also have an A8 hybrid model available, which is powered by the 2.0 TFSI and electric motor for a power output of 245 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque. This hybrid can also run entirely on electric power at speeds up to 62 mph.
The new A8 will also come with an eight-speed tiptronic transmission designed to provide fast and smooth shifting. Of course, this transmission is paired with Audi’s quattro all-wheel drive system.
Possibly the most interesting technology in the 2014 Audi A8 is the innovative headlights technology. The optional Matrix LED technology available for the headlights utilizes groundbreaking technology to assure driver and passenger safety when the road is dark and less traveled. These headlights react to oncoming vehicles, making sure they are not blinded by the 25 individual LED lights found in each headlight. Predictive route data is also used to adjust the distribution of light in response to the current driving situation.
Expect the 2014 Audi A8 to arrive in dealerships in that last quarter of 2013.
